Job Summary:

The Chemist will provide technical support to all Functional Areas and achieve the company\’s Business Plan Objectives as it relates to the Technical Department by assigning,  planning,  supervision &/or monitoring of projects to ensure objectives and deadlines are achieved and the management of laboratory personnel and facilities, in accordance with Ansa Coatings Limited’s policies and procedures.

Job Description:

  • Ensure that equipment maintenance / calibration are carried out as scheduled and that consumables are available.
  • Provide guidance in prioritizing, planning and executing TS&D projects with responsibilities including:
    • Formulation and development of new product to meet customer needs/requirements.
    • Formulation of special colors variant in existing products lines at the request of marketing.
    • Raw Material Quality Control and Assurance
  • Reformulation of products to improve  properties or performance in relation to:
    • Competitive Product evaluation.
    • Regional / National Standards.
    • Customer and Industry Standard.
    • New Market Products/Samples.
  • Reformulation of products to eliminate processing / quality problems detected during manufacture and quality control testing.
  • Reduction of raw material cost through:
    • Reformulation of products
    • Evaluation of cheaper alternative raw materials
    • Formulation / implementation of strategies for the working away of slow moving / obsolete raw material and finished goods, ensuring quality and cost effectiveness in maintained.
  • Investigation of Complaints to determine the validity and causes with the development and implementation of preventative measures to eliminate complaints.
  • Assist the Quality Control Supervisors, when required, in Quality Control Testing and Batch Adjustment, and ensure proper maintenance of Quality Standards
  • Ensure accurate and current formulation, manufacturing instructions, quality control information and finished goods bill of materials on Microsoft AX
  • Maintain updated Product Test Methods
  • Submit Monthly Technical Reports on departmental work conducted
  • Provide Quality Assurance support by reviewing the actual manufacturing process from receipt of raw materials to transfer of product to Warehouse; report any deviations to Technical Manager.
  • Supervise the TS&D laboratory through the planning, monitoring, recording and reporting of laboratory work, and setting and meeting of deadlines.
  • Conduct annual performance appraisals of subordinates and undertake appropriate follow-up actions, e.g. plan training and developmental activities for sub-ordinates
  • Ensures the smooth running of the department by coordinating all activities and functions.
  • Participate in Training and Development activities when required
  • Participates in and assist in the monthly stock taking activity.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the procedures set forth in ISO 9001: 2000 standards, the Company’s Quality manual and OSHA standards.
  • Supervise assigned Technical Department personnel with respect to company standards and compliance with company/HR Policies.
  • Promote safety awareness and the development of a safety culture within the company.
  • Conduct any other related duties that may be assigned by the Technical Services and Development Manager.
  • Liaise with external customers/contractors/suppliers as and when necessary.
  • Compliance with Ansa McAL Group Policies.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • University Degree/Diploma in Chemistry or an equivalent combination of academic and work experience
  • At least 5  years’ experience in a Technical Department, 3 of which must be at Supervisory Level
  • Minimum of 2 years working in a Coatings Laboratory and Paint Technology
  • Full proficiency in English; elementary knowledge of Spanish would be an asset
  • Must be free of colour vision defects
