On Saturday 12th January 2019, Carib Brewery received the award for Employer of the Year from the National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW) at its 11th Annual Awards.
ANSA McAL’s Beverage Sector Head, Mr. Anthony Sabga III, accepted the award on behalf of the Caribbean Development Company (CDC) team, at the ceremony which was held at Rovanel’s Resort in Tobago.
During his acceptance speech, Mr. Sabga said, “This past year, our reinvigorated approach of proactive engagement through non-crisis meetings, healthy and robust dialogue on matters of mutual interest and a continued display of reciprocal respect and due consideration for each other, have all gone a long way in cementing our relationship with the NUGFW, and has brought us to where we are today, being awarded the Employer of the Year 2018.”
Mr. Sabga went on to say, “At the end of the day, we all want the same things. We want a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay. Our employees want to be treated with respect and to be paid for their work. This is but one approach to nation-building, and we all have a part to play. At Carib Brewery Limited we will contribute to building patriotism with our products, through our employees and within people, wherever we operate. The ANSA McAL Group has been proudly flying the flag of T&T for over 135 years, and that will never change.”
NUGFW President, James Lambert in his address to attendees at the award ceremony, said employees could no longer work for one hour and expect to be paid for a full day. Lambert told the gathering that employees must give a fair day’s work since the country can no longer afford to hire persons who are not productive. He said the NUGFW was fortunate that it did not lose many members as other labour bodies did in 2018 through retrenchment.
